Iraq Electricity Production Reaches 28,000 Megawatts

Iraq raised its electricity production to 28,000 megawatts, a major increase compared to 19,000 megawatts in 2022. The Ministry of Electricity confirmed this progress as part of its long-term national strategy. This achievement highlights Iraq’s commitment to expand energy supply and reduce shortages.

Minister of Electricity Ziyad Ali Fadel explained the country’s energy projects during a recent cabinet meeting. Current projects under construction aim to add another 15,000 megawatts. These projects include solar power, thermal plants, and combined-cycle systems. The ministry continues to diversify resources to secure a stable electricity grid.

Fadel also emphasized that Iraq reached peak output through careful planning. The strategy involved power plant renovation, improved cooling systems, long-term maintenance contracts, and partial reliance on imported fuel. Together, these measures helped Iraq achieve stronger and more reliable power production.

In addition, Iraq signed major agreements with international companies. General Electric will build plants with a capacity of 24,000 megawatts. Siemens will deliver an extra 14,000 megawatts. Furthermore, negotiations with Shanghai Electric Group will soon add 10,000 megawatts to meet rising demand. These global partnerships underline Iraq’s plan to modernize its power sector.

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani recently confirmed that Iraq’s electrical grid will gain 60,000 megawatts after the completion of upcoming projects. This expansion marks one of the most ambitious efforts in the country’s history. It also reflects the government’s determination to meet the needs of households and industries.

Moreover, Iraq approved a proposal to award contracts for solar energy production. By 2030, the country expects to generate 7,500 megawatts from solar projects. These projects form part of a national plan to reach 12,000 megawatts of solar capacity. Renewable energy will play an increasing role in Iraq’s energy mix.

Therefore, Iraq electricity production now stands at 28,000 megawatts, showing both growth and ambition. The government continues to invest in thermal, renewable, and international partnerships to create a stronger and cleaner power system. Iraq electricity production remains central to its economic development and energy security.
