Iraq Boosts Energy Future with Beiji Power Plant Project

Iraq has taken a bold step toward strengthening its power infrastructure. The country recently launched the Beiji Power Plant project, a major effort aimed at increasing electricity generation and supporting national development.

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani visited the Beiji refinery to announce the start of this major project. This marks his fourth visit to the site in Saladin province, showing the government’s strong commitment to energy reform.

During the visit, the Prime Minister confirmed that the government officially allocated funds to improve Iraq’s electricity production, transmission, and distribution systems. The Beiji Power Plant project plays a key role in that plan.

He emphasized that Beiji is set to become a major oil-industrial hub. The city will soon stand out as a central force in powering the economy and supporting the country’s long-term development. Energy, he stated, forms the core of any national growth strategy.

The project has already begun with the launch of the first construction phase of Beiji Gas Power Plant 2. Once complete, the plant will deliver a total power output of 1,014 megawatts. This will make it one of the country’s most significant power stations.

The project aims to ease the power shortages that affect daily life and hinder business growth. Germany’s Siemens Energy and China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) will lead the project. They will work together to rehabilitate six large Siemens gas turbines, each producing 169 megawatts of power.

The Beiji Power Plant project also includes the creation of a massive power transmission network. It will feature seven 400-kilovolt lines to connect with the national grid. Six of these will serve as major links. Another 132-kilovolt grid with 16 lines will provide electricity to areas across Saladin province.

According to the plan, the first two turbines will start producing electricity within 27 months. Every two months after that, a new turbine will be added. This staged approach allows for steady progress without delays.

The Beiji Power Plant project represents a turning point in Iraq’s energy journey. The project aims to ease the power shortages that affect daily life and hinder business growth. With strong international partnerships and clear timelines, Iraq is moving toward a more reliable energy future.

This project also supports job creation and boosts investment in the region. It helps position Iraq as an energy leader in the region while aligning with broader national goals.
