Iraq has started building the new Baghdad International Hospital, a major step toward improving the nation’s healthcare system. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani officially laid the foundation stone during a ceremony that marked the beginning of this ambitious medical project. So, the event reflects Iraq’s strong commitment to modernizing its healthcare infrastructure and providing high-quality medical services to its citizens.
Health Minister Salih al-Hasnawi and representatives from Apex Health, a branch of Qatar-based Estithmar Holding, attended the groundbreaking ceremony. The project aims to create one of the largest and most advanced hospitals in the region. A short documentary shown at the event presented the hospital’s design, highlighting modern architecture, advanced facilities, and a focus on patient comfort.
The Baghdad International Hospital will cover an area of 100,000 square meters, placing it among Iraq’s largest healthcare projects. Its location near the Baghdad Sustainable Forests project and the Tigris River provides a scenic and calming environment for patients. However, this setting will enhance both recovery and well-being, making the hospital a model for modern medical care in Iraq.
The design combines innovation with functionality. The hospital will include 400 patient beds, 16 intensive care units, 12 fully equipped operating rooms, and 80 outpatient clinics. As well as, it will also feature an emergency department capable of handling a large number of urgent cases efficiently. These facilities demonstrate Iraq’s growing focus on improving patient care and expanding medical capacity.
Furthermore, the hospital’s management expects to serve more than 600,000 outpatients and 100,000 inpatients every year. This significant capacity will help reduce pressure on existing hospitals in Baghdad and nearby provinces. It will also allow more Iraqis to access specialized treatments within the country instead of traveling abroad for care.
Apex Health, one of the top healthcare providers in the Middle East and North Africa, will oversee the project’s development and ensure adherence to global standards. Their involvement highlights Iraq’s plan to attract international expertise and investment to strengthen the national healthcare system.
The Baghdad International Hospital project stands as a symbol of progress and hope. It reflects Iraq’s vision of a healthier future supported by advanced medical technology, sustainable design, and professional excellence. As construction continues, the hospital is set to become a cornerstone of Iraq’s healthcare transformation and a key center for regional medical excellence.
