Iraq and the United States have strengthened their collaboration in the energy sector to support Iraq’s long-term goals of energy independence and infrastructure development.
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani emphasized that Iraq US energy cooperation reinforces bilateral relations built on shared interests. He made the statement during a meeting in Baghdad with US Deputy Secretary of Energy James Danly and Chargé d’Affaires of the US Embassy Joshua Harris.
Al-Sudani explained that Iraq has taken several key steps in the energy sector to drive sustainable growth. The government has set a clear timetable to meet its strategic targets, including achieving self-sufficiency in producing high-octane gasoline. He also confirmed that Iraq aims to become self-sufficient in gas production by 2028 through expanded partnerships and new investments.
Therefore, the prime minister highlighted the importance of Iraq US energy cooperation to boost oil production and develop electricity infrastructure. He underlined that American companies play a vital role in advancing Iraq’s technical capabilities and energy efficiency.
US Deputy Secretary of Energy Danly reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to deepening Iraq US energy cooperation. He said that bilateral efforts have already made significant progress, especially in electricity generation and project development. The United States, he added, is focused on helping Iraq reach energy self-sufficiency and reduce its reliance on imports.
The meeting came after a major signing ceremony in Baghdad, where the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity and Texas-based Excelerate Energy agreed to establish a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) in Khor al-Zubair port. The facility will have a daily capacity of 15 million cubic meters of gas.
The five-year deal represents another milestone in Iraq US energy cooperation, ensuring that they have enough gas supplies to operate its power plants efficiently. This partnership marks a critical step toward modernizing Iraq’s energy infrastructure and achieving national energy independence.
