Iraq and Schlumberger Boost Akkas Field for Gas Power

Iraq and Schlumberger signed a major deal to boost gas production at the Akkas field. This agreement marks a big step toward solving Iraq’s energy crisis and improving domestic gas supply.

The Akkas gas field, located in al-Anbar, ranks as the second-largest in the Middle East. Under this new deal, Schlumberger will partner with Midland Oil Company to drill new wells. Their first goal is to produce 100 million standard cubic feet of gas per day. Later, they aim to increase that number to 400 million.

Iraq sees this project as key to its national gas strategy. Oil Minister Hayan Abdul Ghani, also Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs, stressed the importance of staying on schedule. He called on Schlumberger to meet every deadline without delay.

This new contract replaces an earlier agreement with a Ukrainian company. The current deal goes further by including surface infrastructure and pipeline construction. These pipelines will carry gas from Akkas to processing plants and power the new al-Anbar Power Station.

Schlumberger’s President of Integrated Projects, Gokhan Yarim, confirmed the company’s full commitment. He promised to follow the project timeline and expressed confidence in long-term cooperation with Iraq.

Deputy Oil Minister for Extraction Affairs, Bassem Mohammed Khudair, praised the agreement. He described it as a strategic move that blends Iraqi talent with global experience. He also pointed to the Akkas and Mansuriya fields as priorities for reducing gas flaring and increasing output.

Midland Oil Company’s Director General, Mohammed Yassin, supported the project. He said it would have a strong technical impact. He also emphasized how the partnership opens new chances for Iraqi companies to work directly with major international firms.

This agreement focuses on improving energy output while reducing waste. It highlights the country’s plan to stop gas flaring and use more natural gas to generate power. By doing so, Iraq can supply more electricity to its people and reduce its energy shortages.

The Akkas gas field now plays a central role in Iraq’s energy plans. Through this deal, Iraq strengthens ties with major global companies while building local expertise. The country hopes this approach will bring lasting energy stability and support national growth.
