Gas Development in Kurdistan to Benefit All Iraqis, Says APIKUR

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) boosted gas development in Iraq by signing major deals with two leading U.S. energy firms. These agreements mark a significant step toward expanding domestic gas production and strengthening Iraq’s energy independence.

HKN Energy and Western Zagros committed to agreements that will deliver long-term benefits to all Iraqis.The Association of the Petroleum Industry of Kurdistan (APIKUR) praised the move as a major national step forward.

Colonel Myles B. Caggins III, APIKUR’s spokesperson, welcomed the new energy partnerships.“Iraq has a shortfall in gas and electricity,” he explained. “That’s why producing more gas is good for everyone.”

His remarks followed the high-level signing event in Washington, D.C., organized at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.Prime Minister Masrour Barzani attended and oversaw the signing of deals worth over $10 billion.Therefore, these contracts aim to develop vital oil and gas fields across the Kurdistan Region.

The agreements support a broader push to boost energy production and economic transformation.Gas development in Iraq will expand quickly in the next few years.

APIKUR said these agreements are more than business—they are strategic steps for the country’s energy future.

As Iraq seeks to reduce imports, local gas production becomes even more important.Caggins said expanding gas capacity will also create jobs and bring global investment.
