Iraq faced a new shock on Wednesday when a drone struck the Emirati-owned Khor Mor gas field. The Iraq drone attack hit the facility late at night and caused a complete halt in gas supply. The site lies between Kirkuk and Sulaimaniyah, and it fuels most power plants in the Kurdistan Region. Therefore, the strike created a large and immediate impact on daily life.
Local authorities explained the situation in detail. They said the drone hit the site at 11:30 pm. They also said the explosion cut all gas flow to the region’s power stations. Soon after, people across Kurdistan noticed power cuts. Cities like Sulaimaniyah went dark within minutes. Moreover, AFP reporters in the region confirmed widespread outages.
Omed Ahmed, the spokesperson for the regional electricity authority, described the scale of the problem. He said the region lost 2,600 megawatts of power. This amount forms nearly 80 percent of the full grid. Because of that, the Iraq drone attack created one of the largest power disruptions in recent years.
Authorities moved quickly. They coordinated with Dana Gas, the Emirati company that operates the facility. Their teams began investigating the strike. They also worked to restore the site and reconnect power plants. However, the damage slowed their efforts. A local security source said the drone hit gas storage tanks. The hit caused a huge fire and a massive blast that crews struggled to control.
The Iraqi Joint Operations Command also released a statement. They said the attack did not cause deaths. They also explained that the attack aimed to hurt Iraq’s security and economic stability. Iraq finally enjoys relative calm after years of conflict, and this strike threatens that fragile progress.
No group claimed responsibility. Yet the region has seen many similar attacks. Over the past years, unclaimed rockets and drones hit the Khor Mor site several times. In April 2024, a drone attack killed four Yemeni workers there. Earlier this year, the Kurdistan Region also witnessed multiple drone strikes on oilfields. Because of this violent pattern, the Iraq drone attack fits a growing and worrying trend.
The latest strike highlights Iraq’s ongoing struggle with security threats. It also shows how vulnerable the country’s energy sector remains. Now, all eyes are on repair teams as they race to restore power and protect the region from further instability.
