Flared Gas Recovery Surge in Southern Iraq

Iraq’s South Gas Company (SGC) reported a sharp increase in flared gas recovery across the southern provinces. The company said total recovery has reached 1,750 million standard cubic feet per day, marking a major milestone in Iraq’s gas development efforts.

South Gas Company’s production manager, Shaker Laibi, explained that most of the recovered flared gas is being supplied to power plants and industrial facilities across Iraq. He said the increase reflects years of steady investment and technical progress in gas capture and processing projects.

Additionally, Laibi emphasized that flared gas recovery is one of the most complex operations in the oil sector. It requires long-term planning, major infrastructure, and continuous field development. Despite these challenges, Iraq has made significant gains in reducing wasted gas and expanding its energy capacity.

The official highlighted that recovery projects have been underway since 2013. These efforts have led to a remarkable surge in output, moving from an average of just 300 to 350 million standard cubic feet per day in 2013 to about 1,750 million in 2025.

He added that southern Iraq now plays a central role in this progress. Provinces such as Basra, Dhi Qar, and Maysan currently supply between 1,500 and 1,600 million standard cubic feet of gas to national power stations and industrial sites.

Laibi said the upward South Gas Company trend will continue as new gas development projects advance Iraq’s national goal of achieving “Zero Flare,” eliminating all gas flaring in oil fields. He noted that these initiatives will not only improve environmental performance but also strengthen the country’s energy security and industrial growth.

Analysts said the flared gas recovery surge marks a turning point in Iraq’s strategy to utilize its natural gas resources efficiently and reduce dependence on imported energy.
